On Saturday night, a violent armed attack shook the Los Cantaritos bar, located on Circunvalación Street, in the historic center of Querétaro, leaving 10 people dead, seven injured and one person arrested. The incident occurred around 9:00 p.m. when at least four armed individuals broke into the establishment and began shooting at the diners.
According to the first reports from the authorities, it was a call to 911 that alerted the security forces about the explosions. The alert allowed a rapid mobilization of the emergency services and the police, who arrived at the scene to corroborate the attack. The attackers, who arrived on board a truck, fired the shots and then fled the scene.
Juan Luis Ferrusca, head of the Querétaro Public Security Secretariat, confirmed the number of fatalities and injuries, in addition to indicating that one of the suspects was arrested. Through preliminary investigations, the vehicle in which the attackers were traveling was identified, a Nissan Frontier pickup truck, which was located in the municipality of El Marqués, after having been abandoned and set on fire by the alleged perpetrators in an attempt to erase evidence.
“With the data provided by the vehicle, we managed to track it to El Marqués, where it was found burned. However, we have arrested one person, who is in custody and has been transferred to the State Attorney General's Office,” Ferrusca explained.
The attack caused a great stir in the community, and several videos of the incident began to circulate quickly on social media. In one of the clips, the attackers are seen getting out of their vehicle and opening fire on both the facade of the bar and inside, before quickly retreating. Scenes were also recorded in which the wounded victims were seen inside the bar, while some tried to take shelter.
Once at the scene of the attack, emergency teams provided medical care to the injured, who were immediately transferred to local hospitals for treatment. Meanwhile, authorities secured the area and began working on the crime investigations.
Agents from the Criminal Investigation Police and forensic experts were in charge of collecting evidence at the site, and later the bodies of the victims were transferred to the Forensic Medical Service (SEMEFO) to perform the corresponding autopsy.
